Flight consolidators exist because once an aeroplane with empty seats leaves the gate the airline is losing money, it is very rare for flights to be fully booked.

To be profitable they have to ensure that they are carrying as many passengers as possible.

Ideally all airlines would like every flight to be fuuly booked with all the passengers paying the full published price.

In reality this never happens and they employ whatever means it takes to ensure there are as full seats as possible.

One of the methods they use is to sell bulk tickets to flight consolidators who then sell them on to travel agents and to the public.

How do flight consolidators work?

They bulk purchase unsold tickets from the airlines and hope to make a profit selling them on.

Things to know.

The tickets often have restrictions such as not being able to change your flight once booked or change airlines.

Sometimes you will not be able to claim your air miles.

You can normally only get consolidator tickets for international flights.

Always pay for your ticket with a credit card instead of a debit card as you can make a claim if something goes wrong.

Providing that you are quite happy with all the terms and conditions it is a great way to save money on your airfares.

Remember though, always read the small print before making your booking.
